DRAMATURGY

A film is a story in pictures
This means we need to know what story we wish to tell. Otherwise even the most powerful images will be of little consequence.

Thanks to a screenplay scholarship at the Munich Film School (Filmhochschule München), I was able to study cinematic dramaturgy / of fiction film under Hartmut Grund, the creator of the famous Crime series SCHIMANSKI.

My first three documentaries earned a hat trick of prizes, even though I understood little of all the technology involved. But I knew exactly which stories I wanted to tell.

Rooted in my thorough theoretical training and years of experience as a director, I gradually began to specialise in the field of dramaturgy in documentary formats:

Who is the protagonist? What is his or her goal? What is their personal individual motivation that keeps him or her going? Can the viewer appreciate this motivation emotionally to allow him to follow the protagonist on his quest?
Having answered these fundamental questions we are able to deduce the images that we will need to tell our story. What music supports these images? What further stylistic devices are required as a result?

This applies as much to a short Internet video as it does to the narrative of a ninety minute cinema film. Professional consultancy will improve the chances of any production’s success, whether it relates to developing product and story, the screenplay and/or the editing. Moreover, it reduces the costs of production – when you know what you need then you also know what you don’t need and won’t be wasting your shooting days on redundant footage.
